Literati ™ is a game having
a number of similarities to Scrabble ®.
The main differences are as follows:
The frequency distribution of the letters (i.e., the total number of tiles provided for
each letter) can change from game to game. This is possible because Literati is played using a
computer program, and so need not be tied to a fixed letter distribution as is
Scrabble ®,
which originated prior to the advent of modern computers
The point values assigned to the various letters are different than, and generally smaller than,
those used in Scrabble
The bonus for using all letters is smaller than in
Scrabble ® (35 points vs. 50 points). However,
there are more blanks available than in
Scrabble ®, so such "bingo" bonuses
will tend to occur much more frequently.
The bonus squares, (double- and triple- letter and word scores), are positioned
on the board in different locations than in
Scrabble ®
There are various versions of Literati, and the word lists for these various versions may not be identical.
The earliest versions of Literati are computer shareware games that have custom-compiled lists of words,
which are generally much smaller than the
Scrabble ® lists used by Lexifind.
There is now a very popular online (Web) version of Literati, as well. The various versions do not
always make clear what words are included in their lists. However, if you play a word that is
not in a game's list, your Literati program or site will let you know by disallowing the word.
Since Lexifind is a general purpose word search site, it can find words for
Literati just as easily as it can find words for
Scrabble ®. The only caveat is
that, since the word lists used by various Literati implementations vary, they may not be the same as the
Scrabble ®-oriented
word lists currently used by Lexifind.
In general, the lists provided by Lexifind contain as many, or more, words than
those used for Literati, so it is unlikely that a Literati game would include a word that is not
available to Lexifind.
However, Lexifind may occasionally come up with a word that is not allowed in the particular version of
Literati that you are playing. In our experience, this has rarely occurred with the newer versions
of Literati, such as the one presently played on the Web, because these newer versions have substantial word lists.
If you do encounter this, you can simply try another word.
Because Literati is so similar to
Scrabble ®, we refer you to the regular
Scrabble Help Pages
for a discussion of how to use Lexifind to find words for Literati. As you work your way through
those examples, please just keep in mind the differences that we have noted above.
